Staff, council and members of the community gathered by Howard Street in Midland, ON today to honour the memory of a remarkable individual, the late Mayor George MacDonald. A stretch of sidewalk on Howard Street, between Woodland Drive and Penetanguishene Road, has been dedicated to Mayor MacDonald in his honour.
Mayor MacDonald was a visionary leader who selflessly served the Town of Midland for an astounding 22 years on Council, with 12 of those years as Mayor. Also serving two consecutive terms as Warden of the Simcoe County Council. Continuing his dedication to the community, he sat on boards and committees in his retirement.
Throughout his tenure, he demonstrated unwavering commitment, remarkable wisdom, and a genuine passion for our community. The Town honours a great leader, and expresses the gratitude for the impact Mayor MacDonald had on Midland.
Let this dedication symbolizes Mayor MacDonald's legacy. Just as a sidewalk connects people, communities, and places, Mayor MacDonald has done the same. He connected lives, fostered unity, and created strong bonds within our Town.
As community members walk along this sidewalk, may they be reminded of the remarkable achievements of Mayor George MacDonald. Let it serve as a constant reminder of his leadership, his love for Midland, and his unwavering dedication to public service. Through this dedication, it is ensured that his spirit and his contributions will forever be etched in our hearts and minds.
The dedication provided a space for family, friends, and colleagues a moment to speak and share their personal sentiments and fond memories and experiences with Mayor MacDonald. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of flowers to Councillor Catherine MacDonald, beloved wife of Mayor MacDonald, and then a walk to view the plaques placed at either end of the dedicated stretch of sidewalk.
