About Property Taxes
Property taxation is a key source of revenue for the Town of Midland. A taxpayer’s property tax bill includes amounts levied for public services provided by the Town, County of Simcoe and local boards of education. Overall, the Town keeps about 70% of the annual bill to help deliver important municipal services that our community members enjoy every day such as:
- Public Transit
- Library and Recreation Centre
- Police and fire services
- Solid waste management (garbage, recycling and compost)
- Local parks and skating rinks
- Water treatment to ensure our water is safe to drink
- Roads, sidewalks, and trail networks
The annual budget process considers the delivery of these services and sets a budget requirement that is net of other funding sources available to the Town, such as grants and user fees. Once this requirement is set, each property’s assessment value, along with the property’s class (i.e., residential, commercial, industrial, farm) as determined by MPAC, is used to calculate each property’s annual taxes.
Supplementary Taxes
Supplementary taxes are issued for new building construction, additions, renovations, and property class changes.
These are issued once the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) has completed their assessment.
