Today, Mayor Bill Gordon and Harbour Master Rick congratulated Captain Brandon Durant of the Canadian Steamship M.V. Frontenac for being the first commercial vessel of the season to grace our shores! The Frontenac was the first ship in the Harbour earlier this Spring, however the ceremony was postponed due to conflicting schedules.
Midland’s Top Hat Ceremony is a 100+ years old tradition, first started by James Playfair, one of Midland’s most prominent citizens and owner of over 50 ships. Mr. Playfair added some friendly competition amongst commercial vessels, by celebrating the first ship in the Harbour following the ice breaking up each year.
The silk top hat used in this annual ceremony is a vintage hat from Mr. Playfair’s personal collection. In 2024 the Town had it professionally restored to bring it back to its original glory.
Our Harbour has a deep history of commerce, community and prosperity. The arrival of the first commercial vessel is a moment that deserves recognition and celebration. Congratulations to the Captain, the ship's crew, the shipping company, and all those who have made this moment possible.
