Fire Code Convictions for Midland Apartment Building
For Immediate Release
(August 30, 2023, Midland ON) On Monday, August 21st, 2023, the Justice of the Peace of the Orillia Provincial Offences Court, found the owner of a Midland apartment building guilty of contraventions of the Ontario Fire Code.
The owner of the local apartment building was found guilty and subsequently fined $500 plus fees and victim surcharge, for failure to maintain fire extinguishers and failure to maintain closures in a fire separation. A complaint inspection was conducted on the property in April and found that required annual inspections had not been completed on the fire alarm system and fire extinguishers, closures in the fire separations were damaged for an extended period of time, and there were expired smoke alarms in the residential suites of the building.
The Midland Fire Department continues to work to reduce community risk through fire prevention and enforcement strategies. The Fire Department is committed to ensuring that appropriate measures are being taken by property owners to achieve fire safety through compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.
The Midland Fire Department reminds all property owners, commercial and residential, that maintenance of fire protection and life safety equipment is crucial to ensure tenants can survive a fire should it occur.
