Mayor Gordon gathered with Staff, as well as Amanda from a local organization, La Maison Rosewood Shelter to lower the flags and host a moment of silence in recognition for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
"The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women not only stands as a day to remember the tragic event that took place in 1989, though as a reminder to reaffirm our dedication to address and prevent all forms of violence targeting women and girls.
On that fateful day of December 6, 1989, at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, 14 young women were targeted and murdered simply because they were women.
Since then, this day has evolved into a platform for advocacy, education, and action against gender-based violence. Communities across Canada hold events, vigils, discussions, and educational programs to honour the victims and raise awareness about the need for societal change to end violence against women.
I would now like to invite Amanda Wagner, the Community Development Coordinator at La Maison Rosewood Shelter to come up to share a few words.
Thank you. We will now lower the flags and have a moment of silence for the victims and survivors of gender-based violence.
Today we reaffirm our call for collective action, advocacy, education, and support to create a world where every woman and individual feels safe, respected, and empowered.
Thank you everyone for coming." - Mayor Bill Gordon
