Midland's Historic Top Hat Ceremony is Back! We are honoured to congratulate Captain Brandon Durant of the Canadian Steamship M.V. Frontenac for being the first commercial vessel of the season to grace our shores! Mayor Gordon and Harbour Master Rick presented the antique silk top hat and some unique Midland gifts to the Captain this morning.
This 100+ years Midland tradition was first started by James Playfair, one of Midland’s most prominent citizens and owner of over 50 ships. Mr. Playfair, who died 1937, created the Midland Navigation Company in 1900 and then began a friendly competition by offering a black, silk top hat to the first ship into Midland Harbour each season.
The Top Hat ceremony holds a special significance as it symbolizes the rich maritime heritage of our Town and our deep-rooted connection to the waters that have shaped our history. Our Harbour has long been a beacon commerce, community and prosperity, and the arrival of the first commercial vessel is a moment that deserves recognition and celebration.
Congratulations to the Captain, the ship's crew, the shipping company, and all those who have made this moment possible.
