Midland Ontario - On Thursday, May 4th, 2023, the Justice of the Peace of the Orillia Provincial Offences Court, found the owners of two local Midland motels guilty of contraventions of the Ontario Fire Code.
“The Midland Fire Department continues to work to reduce community risk through our proactive fire prevention and enforcement strategies,” said Fire Prevention Officer/Captain Cale McLean. “The Midland Fire Department is committed to ensuring that appropriate measures are being taken by property owners through education and enforcement to achieve fire safety within our community.”
The owner of Manor Residences Inc. operating as Shamrock Motel was found guilty and subsequently fined $5000 plus fees and victim surcharge, for failure to maintain smoke alarms in all suites of the motel. A complaint inspection was conducted on the property in January and found that there were no smoke alarms in any suites.
The owner of the Midland Comfort Inn was found guilty and subsequently fined $1475 plus fees and victim surcharge, for closures in a fire separation wedged open. A proactive inspection of the property was conducted where an inspection order to comply was served, a follow up inspection revealed that the closures were still being wedged open.
Unreported or unknown fire code violations in publicly accessible businesses can leave patrons and guests unaware and vulnerable to dangerous situations should a fire break out in these establishments. The Fire Department is working diligently within the community to ensure all property owners comply with the Ontario Fire Code and the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. With this said, the Fire Department would also like to remind all property owners, commercial and residential, that working, and in-date smoke alarms are a vital piece in being able to survive a fire.
