Whereas Canada is the first North American country to officially recognize the disappearance of Indigenous women; and
Whereas, in 2015, Canada launched the National Inquiry of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG2S) at the request of Indigenous families, organizations, and Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission; and
Whereas May 5, 2023, marks the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People in Canada, also known as “Red Dress Day” in Canada.
Therefore I proclaim May 5, 2023, as a Day of Awareness of Missing and Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People in Midland and that flags at the Midland Municipal Office be lowered in acknowledgement of same.
Therefore I, Bill Gordon, Mayor of the Corporation of the Town of Midland do hereby proclaim May 5, 2023 as National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People "Red Dress Day".
