Proclamation
World Water Day, March 22,2024
Whereas, an international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993, as the first annual World Water Day; and
Whereas, Midland is privileged to be located on the shorelines of Georgian Bay, the world’s largest freshwater archipelago. The importance of World Water Day echoes through the attention on sustainable management of freshwater resources; and
Whereas, Midland is home to rich indigenous cultures, where Indigenous peoples have honoured the sacred and spiritual importance, as well as the life-giving qualities, of water since time immemorial; and
Whereas, each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater with this year being Water for Peace. When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges; and
Whereas, more than 1 billion people do not have access to clean water and 2.6 billion do not have access to basic sanitation services; and
Whereas, Canada is working with its international partners to promote access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, and to support sustainable water management practices around the world to make life better for people. Since 2000, the Government of Canada has invested over $1.5 billion in support of water and sanitation initiatives worldwide.
Therefore, I Bill Gordon, Mayor of the Town of Midland hereby proclaim and recognize March 22, 2024, as World Water Day and encourage all residents in and around the surrounding community to show the world they care by conserving our water.
