Today, the Town of Midland gathered to raise the flag for the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Mayor Gordon shared some words with staff to shed light on the importance of May 17 and how everyone can come together to create a safe and equitable community for all.
"Annually since 2005, May 17th has been designated as the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. Today people across the world join in the global campaign aimed at raising awareness about the ongoing discrimination, violence, and marginalization faced by people identifying within the 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and additional sexual orientations and gender identities) community.
The Town of Midland is an inclusive community and enshrines the belief that our diversity is a source of strength. We remain committed to amplifying the voices of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans and intersex people with equality. This year’s theme is “No one left behind: equality, freedom, and justice for all”. This shines light on the need to address the persistent injustices, intolerance and stigma faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ persons worldwide.
People’s fear and disapproval of what they don’t understand, or for anything that does not fit their personal beliefs drives intolerance. Education, compassion, empathy and understanding that people are people and love is love are the cornerstones of this initiative.
Together, we can model a world where every person can safely live their lives, with dignity, respect, and the freedom to be who they are. As individuals and businesses, we can create safe and respectful spaces in our community for everyone. " - Mayor Bill Gordon
