Today Mayor Bill Gordon gathered with Town staff and members of the North Simcoe Breastfeeding Coalition and other local organizations to raise the flag for National Breastfeeding Week. Thank you for the work you do supporting families in the community that choose to breastfeed and advocating for continued access to supports and services.
"Today we are here to raise the flag for National Breastfeeding Week. This week is dedicated to spreading education and awareness around breastfeeding, but it’s also about ensuring that every parent has access to the resources they need.
This year’s theme is Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all. This theme highlights the need to improve breastfeeding support in hopes to reduce inequalities that exist in our society. All breastfeeding parents deserve to access these services and supports worldwide.
From healthcare professionals to family support systems, everyone has a part to play in helping parents feel confident in their choices. Here in Midland, there are dedicated service providers and health care professionals offering breastfeeding families support and care.
From lactation consultants to community health organizations and volunteer community members, your work supporting families is so important. Our role as a community is to create an environment that is inclusive, understanding, and welcoming for all families.
As a town, we want to make sure that breastfeeding parents feel supported in public spaces and workplaces. It’s important that our policies reflect the rights of parents to nurse comfortably and confidently wherever they choose.
Inclusivity is at the heart of a thriving community, and respecting people’s choices is central to that. As individuals we should continue to foster a culture of support, understanding, and respect for all parents. By doing so, we can ensure that every family has the freedom to make the best choices for themselves and their children." - Mayor Bill Gordon
