Today we raised the flags for National Indigenous Peoples Day. Mayor Gordon was joined by staff, Council and other members of the public. Elder Trish lead the ceremony in prayer and shared some impactful words. Today is dedicated to celebrating Indigenous culture, though also a time to recommit our promise in collectively amplifying and uplifting our Indigenous communities. As well as supporting each other in learning about Indigenous cultures and teachings.
The two flags raised today, the Beausoleil First Nation flag and the Métis Nation of Ontario flag, are a symbol of celebration as they share a connection to some of our Indigenous community members.
"At every flag raising we start with our land acknowledgement. Sometimes we can get comfortable hearing something a few times, and we lose out on the important message. I’d like to invite you to keep that in mind.
The Town of Midland recognizes that it is located on land which is the traditional and Treaty territory of the Anishinabek people, now known as the Chippewa Tri-Council comprised of Beausoleil First Nation, Rama First Nation, and the Georgina Island First Nation. This territory is within the pre-confederation Treaty 5 and Treaty 16, and included within the Williams Treaties of 1923.
The Town of Midland recognizes that it is located on land which is the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and the historic Homelands of the Metis, and that our Town is home to a large and diverse community of Indigenous peoples.
Today we are here to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. This day seeks to bring awareness to the unique culture, traditions and the contributions made by Indigenous peoples, not only in our community but across Canada.
Today is also summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Many Indigenous groups and communities celebrate summer solstice as a time for thanks and renewal. The importance of this day has lead to the nation wide celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
I encourage everyone to dedicate some time to connect with the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of First Nation, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
Yesterday myself and my fellow Council members attended the flag raising event hosted by the Culture Alliance in Penetanguishene to celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day.
Today we echo the message our Indigenous community members shared with us. The flags raise today are Métis Nation of Ontario flag as well as the Beausoleil First Nation flag.
It is important that we collectively uplift our Indigenous community and support each other in learning about Indigenous peoples and their cultures. There are events happening throughout our area, films and videos that can be found online, and truly so many other ways you can get involved.
Ultimately today is a celebration. Sing, dance, enjoy and laugh. Thank you again Trish and her helpers for coming, and thank you to everyone else who dedicated their time to be here." - Mayor Bill Gordon.
