Mayor Bill Gordon, Council, staff and members of the public gathered to raise the progressive pride flag and proclaim the entire month of June as Pride Month! Pride Month promotes the call for acceptance and education for a safe and inclusive world that supports and celebrates the 2SLGBTQIA+ community members through services, activities and events.
"Thank you all for joining today. We are here to celebrate love, diversity and promote advocacy for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or in simpler terms, we are here to raise the flag for Pride Month.
Let us celebrate the vibrancy of our community and the importance of acceptance for those who do not hesitate to live as their authentic selves; Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual people, and additional sexual orientations and gender identities.
Today we raise the progressive pride flag to show our commitment to our community in promoting a brave and welcoming space. Everyone who lives or visits Midland deserves to feel, seen, heard, and valued.
We celebrate the progress made, as well as recognize the immense systemic barriers the 2SLGBTQIA+ community faced historically, and still experience to this day. There is still work to be done.
Thank you to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community for supporting this conversation and thank you to the social services and organizations who are spearheading initiatives and creating welcoming spaces. Thank you to everyone who takes these words and brings it further through this month, throughout the year and more.
Acceptance is simple: it's about acknowledging this truth and treating everyone with the dignity and respect they deserve. That is what makes Midland a strong and vibrant place to live. I hope everyone takes the time to truly understand what Pride is and why we celebrate it, even if it doesn’t directly apply to you." - Mayor Bill Gordon.
