Today members of the community gathered with staff, Councillor Patel, Councillor MacDonald, and representatives from Terry Fox in the Heart of Georgian Bay to raise the flag for Terry Fox Week in Midland. The Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, September 15, 2024. This event gives the community an opportunity to get involved in the efforts to find a cure for cancer, while sharing the spirit of unity, determination, and compassion exemplified by Terry Fox, as he continues to inspire individuals of all ages, encouraging them to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope. His goal was to raise one dollar from every Canadian. Terry’s vision was to completely eradicate cancer. Although that goal has been reached, there is still so much to do.
Terry’s determination, compassion and drive in the fight against cancer continues to live through annual Terry Fox Events held globally. On September 15th, our community will come together once again for the annual Heart of Georgian Bay Terry Fox Run.
This event is not just about running or walking; it’s about uniting for a cause that touches us all—cancer research. We are reminded of the incredible spirit and determination of Terry Fox, a true Canadian hero whose legacy continues to inspire us all.
Whether it is donating, raising awareness, or taking part in these events, we are making a difference. Since its inception in 1980, the Terry Fox Run has contributed roughly $900 million in funding for cancer research globally. Terry’s journey began over 40 years ago, but his message of hope and determination remains as strong as ever. He taught us that even in the face of adversity, one person can make a difference.
Through the dedication of our community, and the exceptional volunteers and supporters at the Heart of Georgian Bay Terry Fox Run, they have raised over $2.5 million since the initial local run in 1983. Last year being ranked 11th highest out of 200 sites in Ontario.
Together on Sunday, September 15th at Perkinsfield Park, we can make a difference. Everyone is welcome; you can run, jog, cycle, walk, or participate however you like. Let’s show our support, not just for Terry’s dream, but for the countless individuals and families who are impacted by cancer every day.
