Today, staff, members of council, and representatives from local organizations gathered with Mayor Bill Gordon to raise the flag for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15, 2024). Mayor Gordon shared some words with the group to acknowledge the important conversation surrounding elder abuse. The Prevention of Senior Abuse Network Simcoe County (PSAN-SC) works directly in our community to make the world safer for Seniors. Pauline, Chair of PSAN-SC, spoke about the different levels of elder abuse and what services their organization provides.
Today we are here to shed light on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is a day to acknowledge the importance of dignity, respect, and compassion for our elderly population.
Elder abuse is a global issue, it comes in all forms, and sometimes can be extremely difficult to spot. Collectively, we can work together in raising awareness and educating people of all ages on elder abuse and the affects it has.
The Town of Midland is dedicated to supporting our seniors by making changes that directly open access within our community. This includes changes like providing free transit to Midland residents who are 65 years of age and older.
We are not here to just highlight the problem; we are here to ignite change. Organizations like the Prevention of Senior Abuse Network in Simcoe County, are working directly with residents to create a safe environment for seniors.
Thank you so much for sharing, and thank you for all the work you do in our community. This conversation needs to be amplified on all levels, we deeply appreciate you coming today.
