Yesterday, Town staff gathered with Mayor Gordon to raise the flags at Town Hall for YIMBY Week! Mayor Gordon shared some important sentiments about the message behind "Yes In My Back Yard". Thank you to the local organizations who were in attendance: Redwood Park Communities, Shelter Now, Guest House Shelter, CLH, Wendat Community Programs and Chigamik Community Health Centre.

"Thank you to everyone who is here today, despite the weather. The week of May 27-31 is dedicated to shed light on the movement “Yes In My Back Yard” also known as YIMBY. Launched in 2019 in Barrie by Redwood Park Communities, YIMBY Week is a grassroots campaign that aims to increase public support for affordable housing within communities across Simcoe County.
Have you heard of the statement “Not In My Back Yard”, or NIMBY? This ideology is something we can no longer hold space for. NIMBY is rooted in self-interest and fear.
There is an ongoing housing crisis in our area, in Canada and around the world. Unfortunately it will not be addressed by one person. It’s a puzzle with many pieces. No one holds all the pieces…but through working together the puzzle can be solved.
This flag raising would not be possible without organizations like Redwood Park Communities, Shelter Now, Guesthouse Shelter, and other local services and agencies who are actively working within our community and supporting our unhoused and at-risk citizens.
I would like to open the floor for others to share some impactful words.
Local organizations like yourselves are integral to our society, thank you for all you do. In working with service providers and the County of Simcoe, we released our Community Response Toolkit that contains helpful information on access to supports, services, and other resources available in the area, this reader friendly guidebook can be found online at simcoe.ca/midlandtoolkit.
Let’s raise the flag!" - Mayor Bill Gordon.
