Signs within the Town of Midland are regulated under Sign By-law No. 2011-79, as amended and in some cases are regulated under the Ontario Building Code. A sign permit is required before you erect any of the following signs within the Town of Midland:
- All permanent signs except where exempted by the Sign By-law
- Canopy signs (or awnings) that overhang the street or sidewalk (please note that an encroachment agreement may also be required)
- All temporary signs except where exempted by the Sign By-law

Sign Variance |
Where the proposed signage cannot meet the requirements of the Sign By-law, a Sign Variance or Sign Amendment would be required prior to erecting the signage. Where the proposed signage requires a minor alteration of the regulations, a Sign Variance may be the appropriate remedy. You should discuss the proposed signage with Planning staff prior to submitting a Sign Variance Application. |
Sign By-law Amendment |
Where the proposed signage cannot meet the requirements of the Sign By-law, a Sign Variance or Sign Amendment would be required prior to erecting the signage. Where the proposed is specifically prohibited or requires a major alteration of the regulations, a Sign By-law Amendment would be the appropriate remedy. You should discuss the proposed signage with Planning staff prior to submitting a Sign Amendment Application. |
